On the occasion of the 127th Jayanthi of Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal, the Shankara Hindu Mission in Mumbai organized a free ration distribution drive to support those hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the Shankara Mattham in Matunga, volunteers handed out rations to 100 beneficiaries, helping vulnerable families cope with food insecurity. The outreach extended further: in Dombivali, 30 people also received free ration kits.
Siva Subramanian, the mission’s secretary, stated that this was not a one-off event. He assured that such distribution efforts will be done monthly, targeting various sections of society, including COVID-19 warriors.
The mission, founded under the auspices of the late Sankaracharya of Kanchi Peetam Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal, is known for its service-oriented work in Mumbai.
Beyond Matunga and Dombivali, the mission’s previous distributions have also included essential food items like rice, flour, oil, and pulses to groups such as railway porters, dabbawalas, flower vendors, taxi drivers, and domestic workers.
This intervention comes at a time when many low-income households and daily-wage workers are struggling with loss of livelihood and uncertainties brought by the pandemic.
